Local SEO for Contractors: How to Rank in Your City

The Lead Venture··3 min read

If your contracting business doesn’t show up when someone searches “[your service] near me” or “[your service] in [your city],” you’re invisible to the customers who are most ready to hire. Local SEO fixes that.

What Local SEO Actually Is

Local SEO is the process of making your business appear in Google’s local results — the map pack and organic listings — when people in your service area search for what you do. It’s different from general SEO because the signals are tied to location and proximity, not just content.

Google Business Profile: Your Most Important Asset

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single highest-impact thing you can optimize. If you haven’t claimed and fully completed your profile, do that first.

Make sure you have:

  • Accurate business name, address, and phone number (exactly matching your website)
  • Business hours kept up to date
  • At least 10 photos of your work, your truck, and your team
  • Service categories set correctly
  • A keyword-rich business description
  • Regular posting (even once a week makes a difference)

NAP Consistency

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. Google cross-references your business information across dozens of directories to verify you’re a real, established local business. If your address is listed as “123 Main St” on your website and “123 Main Street, Suite A” on Yelp, that inconsistency creates doubt.

Audit your listings on Yelp, Angi, BBB, Facebook, and any industry directories. Make them all identical.

Your Website Still Matters

A Google Business Profile without a website is leaving rankings on the table. Your website needs:

  • Separate pages for each service — “Roof Replacement” and “Roof Repair” should be different pages, not one page
  • Separate pages for each city — a page for each city in your service area with locally relevant content
  • Schema markup — structured data that tells Google you’re a LocalBusiness with specific services (this template includes it out of the box)
  • Fast load time — Google measures Core Web Vitals; a slow site hurts rankings

Reviews Are a Ranking Signal

The more high-quality reviews you have — and the more recently you received them — the better you’ll rank in the local pack. Aim for a consistent flow of reviews, not a one-time burst.

Respond to every review. It signals to Google that your business is active.

Links from other local websites tell Google you’re established in your community. Sponsor a local event, get listed in the Chamber of Commerce, or write a guest post for a local news site. Even a few quality local links can make a real difference.

How Long Does It Take?

Honest answer: 3 to 6 months to see meaningful movement for competitive keywords; faster for less competitive niches and smaller markets. Local SEO compounds over time — the businesses that started 2 years ago have a big head start, but you can close the gap with consistent effort.
