Most service businesses react to the seasons instead of planning for them. The companies that consistently fill their schedule months out are the ones running campaigns before demand spikes, not during it.
Know Your Season Before It Hits
Map out your last two years of revenue by month. You’ll see a clear pattern: when jobs pick up, when they slow down, and when customers start researching before they call. Your marketing should lead that curve by 4 to 6 weeks.
For example: if HVAC tune-ups peak in September, your email campaign should go out in mid-August. If spring cleanup is your busiest period, you want to be showing up in search results in late February.
Run Promotions in the Shoulder Season
The worst time to offer a discount is during peak season (you don’t need to). The best time is in your shoulder months, when you want to smooth out revenue and keep your crew busy.
A simple “book now for [Month], limited slots available” offer with a modest discount or free add-on is enough to pull jobs forward and fill your calendar.
Pre-Season Email Campaigns
If you’ve been collecting customer emails (and you should be), your slow season is the perfect time to reach out to past customers. A simple message: “We’re booking [service] for [season]. Past customers get first access” will generate bookings from people who already trust you.
Email is the highest-ROI channel for this because the list is yours. You don’t pay per click.
Seasonal Landing Pages for SEO
Create dedicated pages for your most seasonal services: “spring lawn cleanup in [City]” or “fall HVAC tune-up in [City].” These pages can rank for high-intent searches and pull in new customers who haven’t heard of you before.
Keep them live year-round and update them each season. A page that’s been live for two years will outrank a new page every time.
Slow Season = Positioning Season
When calls slow down, double down on:
- Google review requests from recent customers
- Before/after photos from your best jobs this season
- Content: FAQ pages, how-it-works guides, comparison articles
- Profile updates on Google Business, Angi, HomeAdvisor, and Yelp
The work you do in your slow season determines how fast you fill up in your busy season.
