Upsells & Add-Ons Playbook for Lawn Care & Mowing Companies
Fertilizer and aeration first, then cleanups and enhancements, then snow. Grow every mowing account all year.
Written by Jonathan Blake, from 25,000+ doors knocked and 1,000+ jobs closed. Updated October 2026.
TL;DR — Too Long; Didn't Read
Mowing gets you onto the property every week. Jonathan grows each account in a set order: fertilizer and aeration first, because they fit naturally with mowing, then enhancement work, then snow in the winter. On his 10-week commercial campaign, the 26 new properties brought $176,346 in lawn maintenance, with snow contracts estimated at more than $200,000 for the winter and enhancement work on top.
- Offer fertilizer and aeration to every mowing customer.
- Sell spring and fall cleanups as part of the season, not as extras.
- Point out enhancement work your crew sees every week.
- Offer snow removal before the first freeze.
- Make the bigger package easy with a bonus, not a discount.
Bottom line: Your crew sees every yard every week. Turn what they see into the next sale.
A $50 cut is a thin margin. A customer with mowing, a fertilizer program, aeration, two cleanups, mulch and snow is a completely different account. The crew is already there. The sale is mostly just asking.
The Upsell Order
- Fertilizer and weed control: the easiest yes, because the lawn they pay you to mow looks better.
- Aeration and overseeding in the fall.
- Spring and fall cleanups, built into the season agreement.
- Enhancements: pruning, plantings, mulch, grading, hydroseeding and turf repair.
- Snow removal, per service or on a fixed contract.
Let the Crew Spot It
Give your crew leaders an easy way to snap a photo and note what they see: thin turf, overgrown shrubs, bare beds, drainage problems. Send that to the customer with a price. A photo of their own yard sells better than any flyer.
Use a Bonus to Move Them Up
When we built a homeowner funnel for Integrity Lawn & Landcare, the offer was a Spring Route Lock-In: a free driveway and sidewalk cleaning, a $149 value, for the next 25 lawn packages. It gave people a reason to pick the full package now instead of just mowing.
Commercial Accounts Grow the Same Way
Property managers who sign for maintenance usually have a list of other projects: tree removal, plantings, drainage, turf repair. On the commercial campaign, those enhancements were sold to the same 26 properties during the season, on top of the maintenance and snow contracts.
Common Lawn Care & Mowing Upsells & Add-Ons Mistakes
Only mowing
The fix: Build a menu of add-ons and offer them at the start of every season.
Not training crews to spot work
The fix: Give crews a simple way to flag upsell chances with a photo.
Forgetting snow in northern markets
The fix: Offer snow contracts to your lawn customers before the first freeze.
Copy-and-Use Script: Fall services package text
Swap the bracketed parts for your own details.
- "Fall's coming! Here's our fall package for your lawn: aeration, overseeding and a leaf cleanup, $[x] as a bundle."
- "Booking it by [date] saves $[y] compared with ordering them separately."
- "Reply YES and we'll add it to your schedule."
